Positive Promoting!

Consumers today are driven more by their feelings when purchasing products at their local stores. Think of the choices you have when purchasing shampoo or any other product. The images the general public sees in commercials, news reports, and print are very important to ensure they are willing to buy the products. The dairy industry has been taking a hit in the image department from the videos and “investigative reporting” that’s has been done recently and is scheduled in the near future.   It is our responsibility in the dairy industry to work together to ensure we are keeping positive images on the front page instead of the negative ones.

As dairy producers we understand that we value the Holstein Cow as a member of the family in many cases.  We take great pride in keeping the cows happy and comfortable for a couple of reasons.  Cows that are well cared for are more productive and more profitable.  The more important reason is we genuinely care for these animals.  We nurture them from when they are born and do anything we can to keep them healthy.

Families are getting more removed from the dairy industry and agriculture.  Our cattle shows that we all value so much are a great learning opportunity for the non-farming public.  Now is the time to start planning some activities to be held during a local youth show or other event.  A great learning opportunity for youth is to have a cow’s ration available to show what a cow eats and then make ice cream in a bag.  It is a very simple recipe and kids love doing this activity!

Hosting a summer picnic is another great public relations activity.  It does not have to be a major event; just something to invite your neighbors to so that they can become more familiar with your operation and the day-to-day workings of your operation.  One event that is becoming increasingly popular in the Midwest is a “Breakfast on the Farm.”  Local organizations have been helping organize these events where the general public is invited out to a farm for breakfast of pancakes and sausage.  Part of the event also involves a tour of the dairy operation including some experts like veterinarians and environmental services showcasing what the dairy operation does to care for their animals and the environment.

We need to keep promoting our positive messages.  We produce a safe and nutrient-rich product for the world.  We care for our cows with great detail for their well-being as well as our own.  I gave some examples of big events to promote the dairy industry but small actions have a great impact as well.  Having a well maintained farmstead may seem minimal but leaves a great impression for the public driving by.  If someone asks a question, answer it to the best of your ability.  Great resources are available online for how to handle tough questions – I recommend visiting the dairy council website in your area!
