| About Us | |
Forest Ridge Holstein was established in 2003 with the purchase of a small group of Red & White Holsteins with a few Black & Whites mixed in. Most notable of this group is Stelbro Michelle Rubens-Red 3E-93, who has raised 11 points in score since her arrival. Kurt grew up on his parents’ 60-cow grade Holstein dairy in rural Eden, Wisconsin. Dairying was his passion, so he attended Lakeshore Technical College’s Dairy Herd Management program after graduating from high school. Many of his classmates had come from registered herds, which piqued Kurt’s interest. After graduation, Kurt started purchasing young cows with deep pedigrees that he could build from. In 2004, Kurt and Sarah met at World Dairy Expo when they were tied across the aisle from each other. Sarah grew up on a 500-cow registered dairy in the coulees of western Wisconsin, near Ettrick, and had been showing cattle since the age of nine. She attended UW-Madison Farm & Industry Short Course after high school to further her dairy knowledge. When Sarah moved to Eden in 2005, she brought a few of her own cows from her parents’ Wegnerlann herd to build upon what Kurt had started. Kurt and Sarah continued to purchase cattle, and by using embryo transfer on a few of the deeper-pedigreed cows, have managed to build their small registered herd quickly in a few short years. Currently, there are approximately 120 milking and dry cows (including Kurt’s father’s grade cows) and 150 heifers that roam the pastures at Forest Ridge. The farm is operated by Kurt, Sarah and Kurt’s father, Randy. Randy focuses on crops and fieldwork, while Kurt and Sarah work with the cows. Kurt’s mom, Ellen, holds a job off the farm, but takes care of the bookwork and helps in the barn when needed. |
