Donna Beal, Westport, NY, is director of development at the Holstein Foundation. Before joining the Foundation, she was vice president for administration and development at Ecologically Sustainable Development Inc. (ESD), an organization developed to provide technical assistance to people in countries switching to a market economy. Prior to her tenure at ESD, she was administrator and membership director for the Adirondack Council, with membership swelling from 3000 to over 18,000 under her management.

Sam and Beverly Minor, Washington, PA, have been recognized as 1998 Pennsylvania Master Farmers. The Minors milk 110 Holsteins. One-half of the milk is retailed at their Springhouse Market. They also operate a restaurant and a catering service. As part of their entertainment farming program, they host over 3000 children during spring and fall educational tours.

Accelerated Genetics
Brenda Behnke, Brooklyn, WI, is advertising coordinator for Accelerated Genetics. Prior to coming to Accelerated, Behnke was a herdsperson at Rolling Lawns Farms and completed internships at Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board and a Madison radio station. She is a Univeristy of Wisconsin-Madison graduate with a degree in dairy science.

Obituary
Jack Holtzapple, 73, Lebanon, OH, died Oct. 11, 1997. He was farm manager for over 42 years at SanMarGale Farm, Oregonia, OH, retiring in 1990. After serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II he returned home to work as an official milk tester for Ohio State University and was field editor for several years for both the Ohio and Pennsylvania Holstein News publications. He was a 4- H dairy club advisor, president of the county DHIA and a board member of the district Holstein association. He leaves his wife, Mary; a son; two daughters; and five grandchildren.

Obituary
Edward Oleskie, 76, Piscataway, NJ, died Oct. 21, 1997. He was a former dairy science instructor and Extension specialist at Rutgers University. Oleskie was a 1943 Rutgers University graduate with a degree in agriculture. He served in the Marines during World War II and was registration manager of the American Jersey Cattle Club after the war. Oleskie was general manager and assistant to the owner of Heep Farms and Ranches in 1949 and later joined the Rutgers faculty in 1953. He retired from the university in 1987. He was active in a number of national and state dairy organizations, including the New Jersey Holstein Association. He leaves his wife, Margery; two daughters; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. 12/12/97

Ernst Theo (Ted) Haberland, 77, Upperville, VA, died Dec. 3, 1997. He was born and raised in Germany, immigrating to the U.S. several years after World War II. Haberland was a farm manager in eastern New York state initially and moved to Upperville in 1955 to expand and manage John Archbold's Foxlease Farm. The farm went from a 50-cow herd with 250 acres to 120 cows with 1900 acres. Haberland received the Meritorious Service award from the Virginia Holstein Association in 1984 and in 1985 was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his work with agricultural exchange students.He leaves Ursula, his wife of 54 years; a son; two daughters; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a sister. 12/12/97

World Dairy Expo Honors Volunteers
Three World Dairy Expo volunteers were recently honored at an annual volunteer appreciation banquet at the Dane County Expo Center, Madison, WI. Each year almost 400 volunteers help run the cattle shows, commercial exhibits, youth contests and craft show during World Dairy Expo, according to an Expo report. This year's "Friends of Expo" honorees: Joe Sarbacker of Fischerdale Farm, Belleville, WI -- President's Award; Lisa Behnke, New Glarus, WI -- Friend of Expo Award; and Tom Morris of Tom Morris Ltd., Amery, WI -- Industry Friend of Expo. 12/12/97

Award
John and Millie Gross, Madison, SD, were honored recently as Distinguished Benefactors by South Dakota State University (SDSU) where John Gross earned degrees in dairy production and animal husbandry. Gross and his wife sponsor an agricultural athletic scholarship at SDSU. One of the recipients of this scholarship was Adam Timmerman, the starting right guard for the Green Bay Packers. Gross is a member of the Holstein Association USA Board of Directors.

Obituary
Samuel Acker Sr., 69, Chester Springs, PA, died Oct. 25, 1997. He owned and operated Char-Sam Holsteins from 1955-1986 and was the breeder of Char-Sam Elevation Pabst, a successful proven AI sire for Select Sires. He received the Outstanding Young Farmer of America Award in 1963 and was a Pennsylvania Holstein Association Director and Executive Committee Member. He leaves a son, two daughters, one brother, six grandchildren and a great-grandson.
