| April 22 – Holstein Québec Spring Show |
In an electrifying
atmosphere generated by the presence of more than 400 people, the
sale of 71 animals of high genetic quality, five more than
last year, at an average price of $7,646, an increase of more
than $800 compared to 2008, provided indisputable evidence
that the National Sale, held April 22nd as
part of the Holstein Québec Spring Show,
is increasingly appreciated by both buyers and sellers.
The highest bid, $29,000, was made jointly by
Ferme Richard Blanchette et fils, Ferme Pellerat and Domicole Holstein,
an Ontario operation, to acquire Clovis Toystory Bossny. Two other
animals also sold for over $20,000, namely, Louiselle Toystory
Esperance, bought by Cleroli, Parkhurst, Damibel and Claudia Chabot,
for $22,000, and Dulet Bolton Kristy, bought by David Hoese, from
the United States, for $20,500. As well, another 12 buyers paid
$10,000 or more to acquire one of the animals that were up for
auction.
The 49 calves brought in an average selling
price of $6,712; the 22 cows found buyers for an average of $9,727.
The interest shown by breeders from outside of Quebec was further
proof of the event’s success. In fact, 10 animals were purchased
by residents of other Canadian provinces, and six others set off
for the United States.
According to Stéphane Tardif, Sales
Manager for Holstein Québec and coordinator of the Sale,
the Association’s underlying goal of democratization has
truly been achieved. Remember that it was four years ago that Holstein
Québec revived the Sale by taking it under its wing. Mr.
Tardif says that the Sale’s organizers are not only delighted
at the economic results, but also at the fact that this auction,
organized by a group of breeders, has something to answer everyone’s
needs. Indeed, operations that are able to put their animals up
for sale as much as those seeking good genetic potential to start
out in breeding or to enhance their herds can find what they’re
looking for at the Sale.
Under the supervision of Mr. Pierre Myre,
a range of animals were selected for the sale: some with high indexes,
others with definite show potential, a number of red and white
animals, and some with high production. Even if it means having
to refuse certain consignments, explains James Peel, general manager
for Holstein Québec, the rigorous selection process is carried
out with integrity, so that all breeders are treated equitably. “The
large number of sellers and the positive response from buyers are
clear proof of that,” he says.
Marcel Martin, president of the Association,
also emphasizes that element of confidence. He is very satisfied
with not only the results of the sale, but also with the contribution
of the breeders, who offered high-calibre animals, and the buyers,
who came from all over Quebec as well as outside the province.
He points out that the organization of a sale such as this is an
expression of the confidence that Holstein Québec has in
its members and their breeding. Moreover, it’s a long-term
initiative, “since those who buy today and who develop the
genetic potential they acquire there may become consignors in the
near future.”
Besides the involvement of the Holstein
Québec team, this Sale owes much to the professionalism
of the 13 members of the fitting team that saw to the care and
preparation of the animals during the five days preceding the event.
Likewise, this event would not have been possible without the invaluable
collaboration of Holstein Québec’s partners, CIAQ,
COOP, Purina and Shur-Gain, as well as that of the Sale’s
sponsor, Premier Choix Agricole.

By Barb Lumley
It was standing room only at the Ohio Spring Expo Sale held
Friday, April 10, 2009, at the Ohio State Fairgrounds in Columbus,
Ohio. Outstanding individuals, deep pedigrees, and well known
cow families would result in an average of $3964 on 36 live lots.
Seven embryo lots averaged $846.
The high selling individual of the sale at
$13,000 was Shady Bottom Forbidden Daisy. Although selling as
an added consignment and not listed in the catalog, she drew
lots of attention prior to the sale. Sired by Sandy Valley Forbidden
and from a maternal line that went all the way back to Roybrook
Starlite and Cornerset Centurion Medalist, she had just recently
been classified EX-92 with a 94 pt. mammary. Rebred, she would
be due in August to Golden-Oaks ST Alexander. Consigned by Gene
Iager, Fulton, Maryland, she was purchased by Greg Hardy, Tipton,
Michigan.
The auctioneer’s gavel would sound at
$12,700 for Walnutway Kite Casey RC, as James Kemp and Steve
Gilbert became her new owners. A daughter of Markwell Kite-ET,
she was the 2007 All American Winter Calf, and had been nominated
All American Winter Yearling in 2008. Due to calve after the
sale to Scientific Debonair-Red-ET, she was consigned by Gene
Iager, Fulton, Maryland.
Troyce Webster and Mike Strehle, Oberlin,

by Gene Iager, Fulton, Maryland, and selling for $12,500, this
winter yearling heifer was sired by Regancrest Elton Durham and

Carousel week was a flurry of activity and bidding at the annual
New York Spring Holstein Sale. At the end of the
night, a total of 84 full lots sold for an average of $4,523.81.
Leading the way at the high bid of $25,000 was Lot 1 - 1st Choice
Female from 3 Planet pregnancies due 10/09 from Ste-Pen Shottle
Winemall-ET (VG-89 @ 2-09). With a name that you won't soon forget,

from the same maternal family as Sanchez which includes her dam,
Gen-Mark Oman Winsome (VG-88) who is contracted for embryos and
sons to AI. The next 6 dams are all VG and EX, and include Henkeseen
M Hillary-ET (3E-94 GMD DOM). The choice was consigned by the
Winemall Syndicate that includes Steve & Rachel Vail, Jesse
Holmes, Steve & Penny Bishop and was the purchase of Kristin
Cantele of Sands Point, NY. Lot 6 would be the second high selling
lot on the sale at $21,000, a 1st Choice Female from 10 Sanchez

DOM), one of Roy's highest indexing daughters with multiple sons
in AI. The choice will be the pick of Rick VerBeek, Tunkhannock,
PA and was consigned by Stephen Van Tassel of Millbrook, NY.
The third high selling lot of the sale was the high live lot,
Lot 2 - Arethusa Fortune Monterrey-ET. She is the first Fortune
daughter to sell from the two-time Expo Grand Champion, Hillcroft
Leader Melanie (3E-96). Oakfield Corners Dairy of Oakfield, NY
was the winning bidder at $18,000 for this exciting heifer that
was consigned by Arethusa Farm, Litchfield, CT.
A total of 20 heifers and cows were also sold
from the MooKown herd, the breeding of Robert "Whitey" McKown
who passed away this past January. Whitey's presence and impact
on the Holstein business in NY and across the world was felt
for many years having been the former Editor of /Holstein World/
and active enthusiast and breeder of Registered Holsteins. A
donation calf was presented for sale as lot 5, MooKown Pronto
R Loren, and was sold for $15,500 to the Whitey McKown Syndicate
and then re-sold for $1,900 to Affiliated Sires (Foundation,
Browndale & Taurus).
The calf was then re-donated back to the sale and sold for the
final price of $1,800 to Frank House, Central Square, NY. All
money raised from the sale of this calf will go to the Whitey

| April 4 – Minnesota Spring Special
Sale |
Good buys were
plentiful at the recent Minnesota Spring Special Sale,
held in Rochester, MN on Saturday, April 4th. A standing room
only crowd stayed from beginning to end to watch a quality
line-up of cattle from the Upper Midwest and Canada sell. An
especially large group of show-age yearlings and calves provided
a great opportunity for young juniors to make an investment
in their summer and futures in the Holstein business. At the
end of the day, 119 lots sold for an average of $2,526.89.
First in the catalog, first in the ring and
top for the day was Lot 1 – 1st Choice Female from Lynncrest
O-Man Hanover x Hendel Shottle Asia 2414-ET. A final bid of $10,000
secured the choice for Gordon Lamb of NY. This is the first public
offering from Asia, a Shottle daughter of Hendel Rudlph Aster 1482-ET
(VG-87 VG-MS). Next dam is a 2E-92 GMD DOM Mathie that goes back
to a deep breeding Olmar cow family that includes 7 more VG and
EX dams. Asia’s current numbers read a PTPI of +1895 PTA
+1657M +69F +48P +2.75T and a ME projection of 31,225M 1195F 901P.
All of Asia’s sons are headed to AI and the interest of this
choice will be particularly high as Hanover is the #1 GTPI Oman
son in the breed! The choice was the consignment of Hendel Farms
in Caledonia, MN.
Lot 2 would be the second high selling lot of
the sale at $9,500 – Da-So- Burn Bolver Britta-ET. Britta’s
dam is Da-So-Burn Goldwyn Britt-ET (VG-86 VG-MS @ 2-08) who has
a GTPI of +1871M PTA +1278M +67F +47P +558NM. Britt has numerous
contracts for sons and embryos. Boliver Britta herself sold with
a $5000 AI bull contract. The pedigree is full of VG and EX dams,
going back to the “other” popular cow to come from
Regancrest breeding, Regancrest Mark Chairman Bea (2E-91 GMD DOM).
Britta was the consignment of Darin and Sonya Burnikel and will
make her home in Milroy, MN as Mike Welu was the winning bidder |

Blue Ribbon Sale
Averages Close To AUS$6000
An average that kissed AUS$6000 at
Bluechip Genetics thumbed its nose at poor milk prices in Victoria
on Friday April 3rd.
Dean and Dianna Malcolm and their partners continued
to prepare for the high profile Blue Ribbon sale on the tail of
worrying milk prices earlier in the week that had made dairy farmers
throughout the state cringe.
More than 400 people gathered on the Bluechip
property, near Shepparton, for an offering that included 54 head
- predominantly unjoined heifers. Buyers came from every state,
contributing to an average of AUS$5944.
The top price of AUS$12,000 was reached twice.
The first was for lot 9A, Bluechip Shottle Bonnie. The August 2008-born
heifer was out of Bluechip Derry Bonnie, the oldest daughter from
Fairvale Jed Bonnie, the two-time International Dairy Week (IDW)
grand champion (2005 and 2007). She sold to Jetstar Holsteins (Steve
and Jackie Mills, of Rochester).
The second AUS$12,000 threshold was reached
on Jay W Dundee Night, a young milking individual who was out of
another two-time IDW grand champion, Jay W Jed Night (2001 and
2002). Night sold in calf to marketable sire Goldwyn. She was bought
by JN, DJ and JA Watts, of Pyree, in New South Wales. |
