The 22st edition of the Waupaca/Waushara Show Opportunity Sale held at the fairgrounds in Weyauwega on March 15 netted all-time record highs for sale gross and sale average. Forty-five lots grossed $125,200 and averaged $2,782 with two additional embryo lots selling for $3,750 for a final sale gross $128,950.
The high-selling animal at $9,400 was a 9/08 Goldwyn Choice from Above-Par Durham Paoli (VG-88). Paoli's maternal sister is the well-known Above-Par Finley Patty, the Reserve Int. Champion at the Illinois Championship Show in 2006. Consignment by Tom Kestell, Waldo, the choice was purchased by Tony and Brenda Gudex, Brownsville.
LaVerne Lupak, Custer, offered $6,ooo for the second-high seller, a 9/07 Lou daughter out of Ralma Duce CF Chip-ET, with sons contracted to AI and internationally as well as embryos to Germany. She was consigned by R-Z Holsteins, Stevens Point.
Andy Brantmeier of Sherwood consigned the third-high seller, a 9/09 Goldwyn daughter whose second dam is Hilrose Durham Allie (EX-92) with 108,350 pounds lifetime milk. She was purchased by Brandon Smith, Pulaski, for $5,200.
Unique to the Waupaca-Waushara Holstein Sale, four deserving youths received calf project grants to assist in purchasing an animal. The grants are supported by generous agribusinesses throughout the area and the breeders throughout the two counties along with proceeds from the sale committee. In addition, this year Spiegelberg Implement, Manawa, sponsored its own calf project grant. Grant recipients were Amy Blake, Pine River, Peter Jarvis, Wautoma, Jacob Riemer, Clintonville and Tyler Sawall, Clintonville. In addition, a semen sale preceding the sale netted over $3,900 with proceeds benefiting the Waupaca-Waushara Junior Holstein Association.
The sale chairman was Tom Anderson with Jim Hoskens on pedigrees. Darrell Worden, auctioneer, worked with sales personnel Lynn Harbaugh, Kevin Jorgensen, Jay Jauquet and Chad Ryan. The barn crew was led by Krista Leudtke with the junior members also leading the animals. Tony Brey, Ryan Krohlow and Cody Schultz handled the fitting. A host of other county members fulfilled all the other responsibilities to manage their own sale.
