The National Milk Producers Federation today asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to boost its purchase prices for cheese and milk powder in order to bolster the current rock-bottom milk prices that are threatening the livelihoods of thousands of dairy farmers.
In a letter sent Friday to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, NMPF requested that the USDA raise the purchase price for cheese blocks from $1.13/lb. to $1.19; raise the purchase price for barrel cheese from $1.10 to $1.16/lb.; and raise the purchase price for nonfat dry milk powder from $0.80/lb. to $0.84. These price levels are identical to those suggested by NMPF to Congress as it wrote the farm bill in 2007 and 2008. Higher product prices will translate into higher farm-level prices, according to NMPF. More here

Logistical marathon to find the best of the best New Zealand cattle
Judges travelled 4000km to find the best Holstein dairy cows in New Zealand during this year’s 2009 Semex-New Zealand Holstein Friesian Association On-Farm Competition.
The competition, which was initiated by Semex six years ago, has continued to grow and this year 625 cows from 104 farms throughout the country were entered in a competition that is unique and increasingly celebrated.
The point of difference is that the cows are not judged in a show ring. They are judged on-farm in their working clobber, deliberately acknowledging functionally sound cows that produce, reproduce and last. The initial judges moved between farms, adjudicating the regional champions before the national over judge, Selwyn Donald, from Featherston, stepped in to place the national champions in their respective age-groups. Semex Releases Its First Group Of Genomic Tested Sires
Semex has released its first group of genomically proven bulls in Australia – two years ahead of historical methods.
The group of two Braedale Goldwyn and two Picston Shottle sons have been hand-picked for their pedigrees and team averages specifically for Australasia’s market.
Genomics is the study of genes on an animal’s chromosome, which influences how traits are expressed in individuals. The genetic markers are called SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphism) and ultimately SNPs are expected to identify the best bulls and the best brood cows without the expense and time lag of progeny testing. It has historically taken up to five years per bull to achieve a proof. More here

Pfizer Animal Health Launches Externship Program to Fill Critical Role in the Future of Animal Production Agriculture
The future of animal production agriculture will be missing a critical piece—veterinarians—without support for students to pursue large animal veterinary careers. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, fewer than 10 percent, or about 200 students, graduating each year from U.S. veterinary schools are interested in large animal medicine.
Pfizer Animal Health strongly believes that veterinarians are an irreplaceable element in the cattle industry and is concerned about a shortage of cattle veterinarians in the future. To counter this trend, Pfizer Animal Health launched an Externship Program this spring aimed at veterinary students with a potential interest in large animal medicine. There are more than 100 externship recipients this summer representing 27 veterinary schools from across the United States. Through its Externship Program, Pfizer Animal Health hopes to continue increasing the number of veterinary students with an interest in pursuing a cattle practice each year. More here
