DFA uncovers unathorized $1 million payment in 2001
By Dave Natzke, Editor, Dairy Profit Weekly
Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) members have been informed of an unauthorized payment of $1 million – arranged by former DFA CEO Gary Hanman to former DFA chair Herman Brubaker. The payment, made in 2001 through a DFA affiliate, had not been approved by the DFA board. The affiliate was not identified.
In a teleconference with dairy media on May 9, current DFA president and CEO Rick Smith said all DFA members were informed of the discovery via a May 8 letter from Smith and DFA board chair Tom
Camerlo. Smith said the current board and management team became aware of the payment in the past six to eight weeks. Smith said the $1 million, plus interest totaling “hundreds of thousands of dollars,” has been paid back by Hanman and Brubaker. He said it was too early to determine if DFA would pursue criminal charges against Hanman and Brubaker, but that the co-op would reserve that right. More here

Canterbury Collection Sale 2008 - Christchurch New Zealand 7th May
In what is believed to be a record average price for a dairy cattle sale in NZ $8,670, the 2008 version of this sale was a huge success. Thirty three lots were sold by Australian auctioneer Brian Leslie to a packed audience at Riccarton Racecourse Lounge.
Topping the sale at $21,000 was Deloraine Pierre Narda VG-89. This 3 year-old completes 10 generations of VG or Ex’s and was sold by A & B Sherriff to K & B Eade. Second highest price $20,000 was for a Final Cut nine month-old daughter of New Zealand's current Royal Show champion Tahora Derry Leyla VG-88 sold by Dean Geddes to Tim Barclay. Third high $15,500 was for a August 2007 born Zenith from another Royal Show Champion, Tahora Romeo Tonio EX also owned by Dean Geddes, she was bought by Vince Steiner. Top In-calf heifer at $15,000 was a Goldwyn from an EX Lee and then an EX Broker. A July 2007 Lou daughter was next at $14,000. She was from an EX Juniper Secret Ohio daughter with 3 lactations over 10,000 litres of milk. All lots sold had a very high concentration of North American genetics.

It had been ten years since judge Perry Phend, from Wisconsin, U.S.A., last attended the Holstein Québec Spring Show. He said he was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the livestock shown, particularly the cows. Mr. Phend even added that those that placed last in the various classes could easily win top honours at many other shows.
It is precisely because of the superior quality of this show that breeders from Quebec, Ontario, and the Maritime provinces take part in it. And so a total of 180 Holstein animals were shown before judge Phend on Thursday, April 24, in Victoriaville. The previous day, Mr. Réjean Leclerc, from Saint-Isidore, Quebec, said he was honoured to judge the 85 animals in the Red & White show. “I was impressed by these animals, particularly the 23 calves in the Senior Calf class,” declared judge Leclerc. He also appreciated the professionalism of the exhibitors who presented exceedingly well-fitted animals. More here

Milk Market News from dairyline.com
Monday's half-cent advance in cash butter marked the 13th consecutive trading session of gain. Barrel cheese jumped 2 cents, hitting $1.95, while block was unchanged, holding at $1.94. And cash Grade A and Extra Grade nonfat dry milk jumped 2 cents, to $1.42 per pound. Market analyst Mary Ledman, Principal of Keogh Ledman and Associates cautioned that the barrel price inched above the block price and "that always gives us a precarious situation as to whether one will move up or the other move down." She pointed to Friday's trading which saw the block price drop 2 cents, to $1.94, and Monday's gain in the barrel price came on an offer which, she said, indicates there may be more downward pressure ahead. "We have a $1.90-$1.95 market right now which is unprecedented," Ledman said. "As we enter the peak flush period in the Midwest, the key factor to watch is the export market, which is clearly influencing our dairy products market and it's just really uncertain how long they will remain this strong."

New HSUS undercover video to focus on downer cows at sale barns (as reported in Feedstuffs by Sally Schuff)
The Humane Society of the United States will release today new video footage from an undercover investigation it says show mistreatment of downed cows at auction barns in four states. The press conference in Washington, D.C., is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT. The video will be released online at www.hsus.org following the press conference.
The animals were "left to languish and suffer at auctions in Maryland, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and Texas," according to a HSUS statement announcing today's press conference.
None of the animals were at federally inspected meat processing establishments.
The HSUS statement said its investigators "documented downed cows—unable even to stand and walk." The federal Animal Welfare Act regulates treatment of animals at public places where animals are offered for sale or are exhibited or shown.
The new video follows an undercover investigation by HSUS, which revealed animal abuses at the Westland-Hallmark plant in Chino, Cal., leading to the nation's largest recall of beef. On the heels of that incident, the National Meat Assn., the American Meat Institute and the National Milk Producers Federation filed a citizen petition with the USDA's Food Safety & Inspection Service to exclude all non-ambulatory cattle from entering the food supply.
